Agricultural commodities and pests

Committed to excellence

The Italian milling industry is one of a kind, characterized by its commitment to excellence. From the wheat fields to the production line and ultimately to the tables of consumers. Excellence is what the industry goes by. Today’s cutting-edge technologies ensure the production of high-quality flour products that not only meet consumers’ diverse needs but also adhere to stringent standards of hygiene and health.

Food quality challenged

However, technological advancement alone cannot guarantee excellent flour quality. Or food quality in general. Agricultural commodities are susceptible to insect infestations, with Stored Product Insects (SPI’s) posing a significant threat to the integrity of high-quality food commodities, whether in storage or processing facilities, or during transportation. Various solutions are available to either prevent infestations or deal with them promptly once they occur.

Prevention or cure

EWS Group offers multiple solutions tailored to the specific problem at hand or aimed at preventing potential issues. “When a great deal of care, time and attention is devoted to creating a high-quality food commodity, you wouldn’t want it to go to waste,” says Marta Mottin, General Manager at EWS Group in Italy. She has been with the company for many years and has seen the problems that may occur and the change in demand for more sustainable solutions.

“Traditionally, fumigation has been the way to go to either prevent or cure insect infestations. It has proven to be an effective method to eradicate insects in all life stages. No matter the commodity, modality or storage facility, we are able to solve the problem. It is and remains, however, a treatment that comes with the use of toxics. And with the ever-increasing demand for organic products, we’ve looked into methods to treat food commodities organically.”

The organic approach

“And, transitioning to more organic methods, we’ve expanded our scope of services to include bio treatments. So, where EWS Fumigation effectively deals with pests by conducting fumigations, EWS Bio treatment specialises in organic treatments including low-oxygen treatments, heat treatments, and a combination of vacuum technology and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). All of these services and treatments are executed by highly-skilled professionals,” Marta continues.

Pest control

Where fumigation and bio treatment focus on the treatment of agricultural goods, buildings have their own challenges when it comes to dealing with pests.

Talking about sustainability, it is good to know that there is an approach that prevents pests, often rodents, from entering the building in the first place, rather than controlling them. That approach is Integrated Pest Management, or IPM for short. Whether in a food-processing mill, a distribution center or a storage facility, there are some basic rules that require adhering to. This requires collaboration among all parties. To ensure the effective implementation of the tailor-made pest management plan and close monitoring of action points. “This is where we become partners rather than supplier and customer,” concludes Marta. “Striving for excellence together!”

Fauna management

Talking about buildings, often, the inside is addressed. However, it is important to note that the outside of buildings may be the subject of bird nuisance possibly causing hygienic problems. That’s why EWS Group added bird control to their scope of services as well.
